Sistema Toronto has partnered with Jamaican-born reggae singer/songwriter Jah’mila for a four day learning series residency that reflects on the historical, social, cultural, and spiritual importance of the genre that has shaped Jamaica and touched the world.
This residency will take place at Sistema Toronto’s Jane-Finch centre where a larger portion of the community identify with Caribbean heritage and ancestry. In the first three days, students will use their voices and instruments while exploring rhythm/groove, movement, and reggae’s influence on hip-hop and other genres.
Prior to Jah’mila’s residency, Sistema Toronto students — led by Sistema Toronto teaching artists — will learn to sing and play on their string instruments select songs in Jah’mila’s repertoire. Then, during Jah’mila’s time at Sistema Toronto, she will work and rehearse with students during her workshop series to refine style and musicality.
These workshops and rehearsals will culminate in the March 7th community performance featuring Sistema Toronto students singing and playing in an orchestra joined by Jah’mila and her band.

Jah’Mila is a Juno-nominated reggae singer hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, who now calls Nova Scotia home. A beacon for Jamaican music and culture in Atlantic Canada, Jah’Mila‘s music embodies the spirit of traditional Jamaican roots reggae music, infused with light elements of jazz and soul.
Her journey has led her to tour with renowned reggae acts like The Wailers, Black Uhuru, and Groundation to name a few. She has also collaborated with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Nova Scotia honing her skills as a vocalist and a cultural reggae ambassador along the way.
Her Juno nominated debut album, “Roots Girl,” released in 2022, is a spirited collection of reggae songs that not only honors her cultural roots, but also serves as a platform for social advocacy. Through her music, she champions a vision of a more inclusive, diverse, and supported arts community.
