Sistema Toronto is proud to provide high quality music and social development education that empowers, uplifts, and inspires children from Toronto’s underserved communities. Using ensemble music education as a foundation, we encourage kids to challenge themselves, develop confidence in their abilities, exercise their voices, build community, and grow as engaged citizens and future leaders. This work can be life-changing for students in the program, many of whom would otherwise not have access to music or arts programming and who thrive in the welcoming, supportive environment that Sistema Toronto cultivates. Knowing how important this work is, one of our foundational goals is to extend our programming to as many students as possible and ensure that we’re connecting with our students in meaningful, positive, responsive ways.

Grow our program to include 1000 kids
We’re reaching more students and making our program more accessible by introducing new extensions to our core programming. These include developing community partnerships in order to provide free workshops and group lessons, and introducing daytime programming during regular class time at schools that otherwise do not have a dedicated music specialist. As of the 2023/24 academic year, we’ve worked with the TDSB to offer no-cost, no-barrier music education to our communities, and in the coming months and years we will be expanding even further to reach 1000 kids.
Meaningfully connect with our students through new program offerings
We’re developing new ways of connecting with our students through the universal language of music while maintaining our core intensive programming. In pursuit of this, we’ve introduced a new winds program in which students can learn clarinet or trumpet alongside percussion, and choir programming as well as continuing to learn their string instruments.
Strengthen our Honours Program for Sistema Toronto Core Program graduates
Our Honours Program supports young people who have graduated from the Core Sistema Toronto program and are beginning their high school journey. Honours students are given the opportunity to continue to develop their musical and leadership skills through participation in the flagship performance ensemble, the Honours Orchestra, as well as by receiving chamber music, and teaching and mentorship opportunities. In the coming years, Honours students will have the opportunity to develop leadership and organization skills through involvement in the administration and logistical running of the Honours Orchestra: from maintaining the library and leading communications and operations, to being responsible for stage management and artistic direction, students will be supported in taking ownership and responsibility.
